देलवाड़ा जैन मंदिर
A complex of stunning marble temples famous for their extraordinary translucent marble ceilings carved with the delicacy of lace. Built by ministers of the Solanki rulers of Gujarat—Vimal Shah built Vimal Vasahi in 1031 CE, and the brothers Vastupala and Tejapala built Luna Vasahi in 1230 CE. The artisans were rewarded with gold equal to the weight of marble powder carved away, resulting in paper-thin marble pendants and celestial dancers.
Architectural & Epigraphical Highlights
- •Rang Mandap dome with 16 Vidyadevis (Goddesses of Knowledge)
- •Hathishala (Elephant Court) with life-sized marble caparisoned elephants
- •Paper-thin translucent lotus pendants hanging from domed ceilings
- •Navchowki: Nine ornate ceilings supported by sculptured bracket pillars
